Liza,
The Spud
© 2002 by Bud Lemire
She's half
Chinese, and she's half Filipina
She danced
into my room, just like a ballerina
We connected
as friends, her nickname was Spud
I said that's
a coincidence, for my nick name is Bud
She was a
pasty chef, in a restaurant in Taipei
Where she
earned her living sweating every day
Now she
teaches English, to the children that she sees
To help them
better understand, for they are Taiwanese
Being Chinese
and Filipina, she always felt out of place
For she has
darker skin like a Filipina, but Chinese upon her face
She tells me
that she's not sure where she belongs
I tell her
she will find her place, for I have heard her songs
I knew that
she was lonely, so we came together as a friend
And we keep
each other company, with the time we spend
In the
morning before work, as she drinks a cup of coffee
We join into
a conversation, as she chats with me
Then it's off
to work, once more she's on the go
To teach the
children English, so that they will know
Although she
is homesick, for her homeland that she had parted
Her spirit is
kept alive, with new friendships she had started
Liza, I'd like to think
that you are a flower among the weeds.
A very special friend
indeed.
