Cowboy Lake

Cowboy Lake
1991 by Bud Lemire

An invitation from cousin Ruby, is where I’ll begin
And my sister Nancy volunteered, on the driving
Mom hadn’t seen her cousins, since she was a kid
Somehow they lost touch, as relatives sometimes do

She was looking forward, to seeing them once again
And I was looking forward, to seeing them for the first time then
The area we were going to, was all new to me
On the way there, was some great scenery

It took us some time, to find the exact place
We spotted some people, but not one familiar place
We were greeted first, by cousin Ruby at Cowboy Lake
She wore a friendly smile, and then gave us a handshake

She was there with her boyfriend, they call him Et
Her son Craig and his wife, were the next ones that we met
Chester and his girlfriend Lil, were the next to greet us then
He resembled features on his face, of earlier Duford men

As a child, Mom remembered that he ate mints a lot
We gave him a bag of them, but he must have forgot
Next we met Viola, and her husband Bill
We shook her hand, I can remember it still

We sat at the pavilion, and talked about life
Then Tommy arrived, but not with his wife
He arrived with his daughters, and greeted all his kin
He said his wife couldn’t come, because she was working

We met Woody and Margy’s daughter Nancy, she wore a warm smile
It was another good reason, thet we drove there every mile
Nancy and her husband Tom, were running the show
They picked a good day, for the sun was aglow

Woody and Margy, who’s anniversary it was, arrived at the park
After a nice greeting, they made their way to the pavilion mark
I greeted Woody with a handshake to begin
He looked at me, as his mind was focusing

Then he remembered, just who the heck I was
He put his arms around me, and called me his cuz
There was snacking, that started fairly soon
Later came the caterers, I need more stomach room

Lil got Mom a piece of cake, Viola got me mine
As we didn’t feel much, like standing in line
Nancy went around, taking pictures of everyone
I took pictures also, which was a lot of fun

The Dufords could really dance well, out on the pavilion floor
And the music by the Country Rebels, played their music lore
Mom and I enjoyed watching all of them move
That Tommy and Chester, really got into the groove

Then came the time, for us to say goodbye
We had so much fun, the time it sure did fly
It was a wonderful feeling, to be in the Duford crowd
I know if Grandma Alma was alive , she would sure be proud
Of her nieces and nephews, our cousins who were there
And the warm welcome, that they had to share

I remember it well, and the great time we had visiting with each of them. Several have since passed on, but they live on in the memories of that special day.
